Shooting has got India four Olympic medals since the 2004 Athens Games. Olympians Rajyavardhan Rathore, Abhinav Bindra, Gaurav Narang and Vijay Kumar have inspired many youngsters to take up the sport.
However, the aspiring shooters have to rely on imported arms and ammunition due to limited private sector participation, technical skill and manufacturing capability in India. Multiplicity of players and countries involved in imports increases the complexity manifold. The restrictive nature of firearms import and export combined with stringent requirement of licenses and permissions means fewer participants in this supply chain. Thus, the aspiring shooters and their parents usually have a difficult time in procuring the shooting paraphernalia.
